Antimicrobial Workshop

The One Health Alberta Antimicrobial Workshop, held November 23-24, 2016, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, brought together over 150 invited experts and representatives from each of these worlds, including related industry and government, to promote a sharing of knowledge and viewpoints on this issue in the context of a cooperative and collaborative approach toward solutions.

The Purpose

The primary purpose of the workshop was to facilitate discussion and to help inform Alberta’s progress in addressing antimicrobial use and resistance. This includes helping to inform the process currently underway toward developing and implementing an antimicrobial resistance strategy for Alberta.

Hosting

The workshop was hosted by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA), in close collaboration with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry and Alberta Health, the two departments working together to lead the strategy development and implementation process. It was supported by funding from the Government of Alberta and directed by a diverse steering committee consisting of representatives from each of the collaborating organizations.

One Health

A key aspect of the workshop was promoting a shared One Health lens for viewing and addressing antimicrobial use and resistance—a topic of growing importance locally, nationally and internationally that affects multiple sectors and stakeholders.
